Social networks are the most used digital technologies in the world. According to the We Are Social portal, at the beginning of 2020 the number of active users on social networks was 3.8 billion people (49% of the world population). These technologies are used for various purposes: interact, inform, communicate, entertain, among others. These uses of social media are well known and have been extensively investigated by academics from different disciplines. While using Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc. related to prevention and promotion in mental health has been little analyzed in our Latin American context.

This course will present and discuss experiences of the use of social networks for prevention and promotion in mental health. The analysis will be carried out in terms of its scope and limits. Likewise, the ethical aspects that should be considered when using digital technologies in mental health care processes will be evaluated. In addition, reports and research about the effectiveness of the use of social media in this field will be reviewed.

The uses of social networks related to the prevention and promotion of mental health can be grouped into three main strategies: 1) participation in digital communities to seek support and mental health care; 2) institutional actions in social networks to promote adherence to mental health services; and 3) the mapping of mental health from large volumes of data generated in social networks. The information that will feed the analysis of these strategies has its sources in scientific journals and reports from organizations promoting mental health.

Currently, people find in social networks scenarios for the deployment of their identity, their emotions, their relationships and other aspects that constitute their subjectivity. Likewise, in social media, resources are openly offered to take care of mental health that deserve to be critically analyzed (eg online groups to support people in the process of mourning due to death). In addition, these technologies are also used by professionals and institutions to disseminate their prevention and promotion strategies in mental health. Finally, the information on mental health disseminated on social networks is so broad and diverse that it is necessary to develop criteria to evaluate its quality and possible effects. For these and other reasons, this course is very relevant to complement the training of professionals interested and involved in scenarios related to mental health.

Face-to-face assisted by technology through synchronous meetings.

The methodology of the course is online with synchronous interaction between teachers and attendees - at defined times and dates. Attendees will be assigned activities prior to the meetings to promote discussion and autonomous learning. In the telepresence meetings there will be presentations by the teachers, activities based on gamification and socialization of materials by the attendees.
