Links Digital spoke with the rector of the CES University, Dr. Jorge Julián Osorio Gómez, about the challenges facing the institution this year in the midst of the alternation model, the economic reactivation and the challenges of higher education.

Digital Links: How is the University going with the current panorama of the pandemic?

Rector: “The University is a flexible institution and was able to adapt to changes. Since March 2020 it has not stopped. Our decision was not to close and continue in the first line with the residents, with the interns, with the practice fields within a complementary system of alternation. "

“Last year we did well academically, socially and economically. This is demonstrated by the quality of human talent, the commitment to excellence, the appropriate student selection processes.

The outlook for 2021 is very promising, growth in teaching and administrative hiring, 108% growth in the number of students, an increase in the number of extension, spin-off and start-up projects. "

What did the University, your university community, learn from this health emergency?

Rector: “We had CES at home for three years where the students went virtually to the University. The learning was that we were able to adapt quickly. That was the first apprenticeship. We did CES at home every 6 months, and now we do it every day, but it came from a process. The second lesson that he left us is the importance of having staff hired full time by the University as we have been doing consistent with our EFR commitment, which teaches us that a committed and happy human talent is the most important thing in the Organization.

The third teaching was the importance of accompaniment, communication, administration, relationship with the environment and suppliers as a fundamental part in the maintenance and growth of the University. We have never suspended communication between the deanships and each of their teachers, students ”.

What is the balance of registrants at the beginning of 2021?

“This 2021 we grew with the number of students compared to the previous year. We doubled the number of applicants, in the part of Clinical postgraduates and in some undergraduates. We are in 108% of old students and we are in 105% of new ones. The ancients correspond to those who returned, decided to reintegrate. This is the result of the strategy of flexibility, of financing, of deferring payments to accompany the students. "

How has the alternation process been? When would the definitive face-to-face activities return?

“The alternation is already there. The students are coming to do their internships. I think that we will not return to past scenarios, all sitting in a classroom. Now they will be virtual and face-to-face classrooms, virtual and face-to-face practices. Returning to the new normal is a new challenge. We will all return when we achieve herd immunity. With this country's vaccination scheme, with a million vaccines per month when we are in total movement, that means 12 million vaccines a year, I believe that this year we will spend it alternately, without crowds, coming to the University, in groups small with biosecurity ”.

What new academic projects does the institution have contemplated?

“The beginning of the Optometry undergraduate will come. The growth will be from the existing programs in the faculties and the articulation of these for a harmonious growth from knowledge. We will grow in masters, doctorates and specializations. Entrepreneurship processes will be vital in University growth, we will promote the development of the substantive functions of the University: teaching, research, innovation, extension and sustainability. Exponential growth is projected in extension complemented with virtuality. For example, the La Perla project, in Psychology, the Nutrition projects, etc. And the creation of spin off and start up as well as the cases of HolaDr, GenomaCES, UTi, MESH, among others ”.

Did the work for the construction of Building D at the Poblado headquarters stop because of the pandemic?

“Building D is currently suspended for construction. We will make adjustments to classrooms, laboratory classrooms, parking lots according to the new post-pandemic realities. "

Why do we now talk about the CES organization, that we are all CES?

“What we want with Todos Somos CES is to articulate processes. Not creating new functions or new people is to articulate processes through a matrix. Let me explain: we have the IPS CES Sabaneta seeing patients, the ICMT seeing patients, the CES Clinic seeing patients the same Warehouse. But there is no unification of the information system, of the rates, or of the solution in the referrals, so if we unify the processes we achieve a culture that we are all CES. The CES has grown a lot and is in different activities. We have to articulate everything. It is a great challenge and it will take time. Once we articulate ourselves, we will have to migrate focused on digital transformation ”.

In the middle of the beginning of the anticovid vaccination in Colombia, the study in alternation model, the economic, social and health consequences left by the pandemic… What is your message this year for the entire university community?

“The most important thing at CES is human talent. So we will continue the same, supporting human talent and the development of the University. There is a message of hope: we will return to a new normal, not to the old normality, to which we are already adapting and in which each of you is going to be the protagonist. We will return, the CES will continue to grow, it is growing in the pandemic and we will continue with our social responsibility. For me the human is the most important thing! "
