Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can lead to tooth loss; It is caused by plaque and tartar buildup due to poor teeth cleaning and lack of dental floss. Having this condition is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's, diabetes, among others.
For this reason, dental students in the company of teachers from the same area created the project Do not turn your back on your mouth. This is a prevention, health care and healthy lifestyle initiative for the CES University community to strengthen oral health care.
"The mouth is one of the most important sites in the body because it is the gateway to many biological systems, it is a site with a number of microorganisms with many inflammatory responses that affect not only the health of the mouth but also the health of the body. ” , Said Dr. Andrés Duque Duque, Dentist at the U. CES and professor at the School of Dentistry and postgraduate in Periodontology.
Three graduate students, four members of the oral health research hotbed and ten students from the sixth semester of undergraduate Dentistry, are part of Do not turn your back on your mouth and are in charge of socializing good care in the oral health. In these campaigns, the university community learned to prevent the disease and was given an oral hygiene kit.
“We want the mouth to be taken into account as part of healthy lifestyles in health, that doctors, nurses, nutritionists and all areas of health know about periodontal disease and are able to intuit that there is the possibility of having a disease ", concluded the teacher Duque Duque.
If someone from the university community identifies some symptoms such as inflammation, redness, bleeding and tenderness of the gums; IPS CES Sabaneta has the service of dentists and specialists in periodontics who can prevent and treat oral diseases.
