The CES University in favor of the care of the environment, has composted 5.5 tons of animals in a state of mortality during the year 2019, thus improving the figures of the immediately previous year.
Gregory Mejía Sandoval, professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics of the CES University, reflected on the operation of the mortality composting project of the institution, located in the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Center from the municipality of Envigado.
“In total, during 2019 5.5 tons of animal mortality of large species were composted, including horses, cattle and pigs, thus producing about 3.3 tons of fertilizer, which were used for the recovery of degraded pastures in the Villa Elisa farm, practice center from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics. We recover three hectares for animal feed. In addition, this fertilizer was used in the fertilization of the gardens of the different headquarters of our University”, Commented the teacher Mejía Sandoval.
In 2019, an increase in production and biological efficiency of 26% was achieved, compared to 2018, which contributed to the reduction of the institutional carbon footprint, being more sustainable with the environment, institutional policy of our University.
